CREATURES ART SERIES

CAROL WALLACE | SINKING

In this body of work, I've given the creatures and forms my kids have drawn a space to dwell. There are battles, struggles, comedies and the impossible. They are irresistible to me as their mother and as a painter. I wanted to give them life, beyond scraps of paper on their way to the recycle bin. In their new environment on canvas are the layers of the past and dramas of the present developing a different narrative, out of context from their original intention or meaning.

I often start a painting with no initial plan, making loose, spontaneous gestures. My painting process is an improvisational response to the way a particular gesture, mark or colour leads to another. Parenting relies on this same kind of trust in my own decisions and actions and while these little people have consumed much of my time and energy, it is from them I have learned to trust the intuitive process in my painting practice.
